The Testimony of Jesus

"The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." — Revelation 19:10

The prophets were not just voices. They were lives. Isaiah walked naked. Jeremiah wept in a cistern. Hosea married a prostitute. The message was in the man.

What the Didache Says

"Every apostle who comes to you shall be received as the Lord. But he shall not stay more than one day, or if need be, two. If he stays three days, he is a false prophet. Every prophet who speaks in the Spirit you shall not test or judge, for every sin shall be forgiven, but this sin shall not be forgiven. Not everyone who speaks in the Spirit is a prophet, but only if he has the ways of the Lord."

— Didache 11-12

The early church did not suppress the prophetic. They ordered it. Prophets were received with honor — but tested by fruit. The one who stayed too long, asked for money, or taught contrary to the Way of Life was not a prophet of God.

The Discernment Process

Test the Spirit

Does the word align with Scripture? Does it glorify Christ? Does it produce repentance, faith, and love?

Test the Fruit

Does the prophet walk the Way of Life? Is their character consistent with their claim? Are they humble, generous, and accountable?

Test the Message

Does the prophecy edify, exhort, and comfort? Or does it flatter, manipulate, or sow division?

Test by the Elders

The church discerns together. No prophet operates alone. The elders weigh, the body confirms, and the Scripture judges all.

The Prophet's Life Is the Message

Isaiah walked barefoot and naked for three years as a sign against Egypt and Cush (Isaiah 20). His body was the sermon.

Jeremiah was thrown into a cistern for speaking unwelcome truth. He wept over Jerusalem. He was called the weeping prophet because he felt what God felt.

Hosea married a prostitute named Gomer to demonstrate Israel's unfaithfulness. His marriage was the message. His pain was the Lord's pain.

Ezekiel lay on his side for 390 days, cooking food over human dung, to bear the iniquity of Israel. His suffering was the word of the Lord.

"The prophets were not men who spoke words and then went home to comfortable lives. They became the message. Their wounds were the Lord's wounds. Their tears were the Lord's tears. This is why the gift of prophecy is not safe. It costs."

Share a Word

If you believe the Lord has given you a word for the body, submit it here. It will be reviewed by the elders in prayer and tested against Scripture.
